Ford should have kept making the Town Car like Chevy did the Impala Limited for rentals. The Town Car is the perfect livery car.
Bonus take: the XTS looks stupid as a hearse.

They should’ve ended production in the 90’s when the platform was already 20 years old

If you’re going to keep the Panther around, might as well build some police pursuit Crown Vics, too.
And the XTS just looks stupid. Period

Lots of police still miss their crown vics. Those were solid cruisers.
Disagree on the normal XTS. I like it a lot. Yes, it’s visually a FWD car, but that doesn’t bother me.

In the Dominican Republic there’s like one guy who owns a Town Car (Import) and he’s f*cking loaded with dough. Everyone looks at the Town Car like it’s a space ship.

Fair enough. They were essentially alone in that space. It was dumb to exit without something to replace it.

I don’t understand why the didn’t just use escalades as hearses.
Less modifications to do to it, you can just bag it to lower it to load it, give it landau bars.
Edit. I meant just use escalades and not heavily modify a car to do it. Cause they do exist

Agreed, the Panther cars were ideally built for specific purposes. Keep the Town Car for black cab/livery services and a basis for stretch limos and hearses, and the Crown Vic for police cars and taxis in the cities without strict accessibility requirements.
Ford could have maybe outsourced production to AM General or someone if it got to the point where it was no longer economical to build them in a giant plant set up for huge volumes, but I’ll bet sales would still be at least somewhere in the 30,000-50,000 unit a year range today - plus whatever they could move in the Middle East.
The trouble was that new side impact requirement. Ford would have likely kept them around for a few years longer than they did if they didn’t need to spend millions reengineering really old body shells to comply. I wonder if there could have been some special exception worked out, if the cars were going to be built exclusively for government & commercial use, with no consumer sales?

I’m guessing it’s the loading height. That, or maybe that it’s just traditional to have a hearse be a car.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of the XTS - or large FWD cars in general really.

Yeah, I know you hate FWD. I’ve owned both and I honestly prefer FWD slightly for normal driving because of its predictability in weather. It may not be as much fun, but spirited driving isn’t a part of 95% of my driving anyway.

Yeah, there was an amendment to side impact standards that went into force during 2012, apparently the structural changes needed were cost prohibitive.
Considering that the Crown Vic and Grand Marquis shared a body that dated to 1992, with the Town Car’s dating to 1998, and that Ford had already long since decided that the Panthers were not to be a part of its future and would not receive any further updates of any significance.
Wacko
> Chariotoflove

That why you bag it, then slam it to the ground to load/unload.
Still way cheaper than all the body work, and other modifications to basically get in you what an escalade essentially is.

Don’t get the appeal. I’m Not sure about taxi configurations but I rode in the back of a friend’s 98 Lincoln Continental and found it pretty cramped. And no better in the front seat as my knees hit the dash with the seat all the way back. And I’m not that tall. My MINI has leg and head room for days (though not for 4)

I think GM missed a big opportunity here to slap a Cadillac grille on the Caprice PPV and sell it as a DeVille to livery fleets. One issue would’ve been the end of production in Australia, but the Zeta-platform Camaro was built in Canada so they probably could have made them there if they really wanted.

FWD is great for small cars and hot hatches, I can’t argue that. It’s in bigger cars that I don’t like it personally. Forward placement of the engine leads to odd proportions in big FWD cars.
But different strokes for different folks- I get why some people prefer it.

On this point, I have long thought the 4th gen Honda Odyssey was purpose built to be a hearse, especially when painted black.
The current ones might look almost more like hearses, aside from the ugly grille.

Just saying i don’t get the appeal— I find Lincolns cramped. Last time I was at the Chicago auto show I couldn’t get comfortable in a single vehicle on the Lincoln display, either my knees hit the dash or my head hit the roof and I’m only 6’2”
